Memory That Teaches: International Holocaust Remembrance Day at Our School

January 27 marks International Holocaust Remembrance Day - a date commemorating the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp in 1945. It is observed worldwide to honor the memory of the Holocaust and its victims.

As part of the remembrance activities, our school hosted a meaningful educational meeting aimed at deepening historical understanding, fostering empathy, and emphasizing the responsibility of preserving memory. Such initiatives focus on researching, documenting, and sharing the history of the Jewish community in Latvia from the 16th century to the present day, as well as preserving the memory of the Holocaust and its victims.

Grades 1-4
Through guided discussion and questions about who we are and where we come from, younger students learned the importance of preserving memory and respecting the experiences of others. The meeting helped them understand that history is not only distant events, but also personal and family stories we carry with us.

Grades 5-12: “Girls’ Stories of Life and the Holocaust”
For older students, the meeting offered a deeper insight into history through personal narratives. By exploring real life stories - especially those of girls and women - students reflected on how suddenly and tragically lives can change, and how powerful human stories can be in shaping memory and teaching compassion, integrity, and responsibility toward history.

The meeting encouraged deeper understanding, inspired reflection, and raised important questions that will remain with our students long after the lecture ended.
